Painted Ships
There is a great art teaching resource that we sometimes use in grade 5 called Arts Attack. We combined two of the lessons from that resource, Clipper Ships and Winslow Homer, to create the painted ships below. I like to do this project at this time of year because it makes a connection to the explorers that we are studying in social studies.
Shape and Space Design Project
At the end of December, the class had the opportunity to put into practise all of the concepts they learned in our Shape and Space Unit. For this project the class was divided into six groups, and each group was assigned a colour as their team colour. The problem of the project was to create a "gingerbread" (we used foam core board) that met specific criteria. The criteria was classified into mathematical criteria (area/perimeter/lines/shapes required), structural criteria, artistic criteria, and photographic criteria. The complete assignment can be found here.
